I have been a huge Harry Potter fan since I read Sorcerer’s Stone way back in 7th grade. In the decade that has passed since then, my somewhat obsessive nature has only grown more attached to the wonderful wizarding world J.K. Rowling so kindly created for us. To many of my generation, Harry Potter is more than a story, it’s a journey that we can identify with as we grew up the boy wizard.
This weekend, as many of you are aware, marks the release of the first installment of the seventh movie. To celebrate this bittersweet occasion, I decided to try my hand at making my first mythical recipe: butterbeer.
In the books, butterbeer is a drink that Madam Rosemerta sells at her pub the Three Broomsticks, in Hogsmeade (the local village near Hogwarts). The drink is described as having warming and intoxicating effects if drank in excess. Throughout the series, this drink is constantly present, so I thought why not bring fiction into reality?
To my pleasant surprise, there are actually people out there who are way more obsessed than I am and have tried several different recipes for this drink. I settled on an adult version (that can easily be made child-safe), to share with friends before we went off to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.
1 ½ cups cream soda
2 teaspoons honey
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Butterscotch schnapps (butterscotch syrup for the kiddos)
In a medium saucepan, melt butter and honey together. Add sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and schnapps (use at your own discretion). Stir until combined. Pour in the cream soda and heat until warm. Prepare your whipped topping (or use store bought) and assemble. Serve warm and enjoy!
This drink was extremely tasty, even though it was a bit on the sweet side. If you do not like a lot of sweetness in your drink, omit the extra sugar. This drink is great to prepare for parties of any type (not just Harry Potter). This drink would be perfectly suitable for any upcoming holiday parties or get togethers!
Have a great weekend!
